Committed to the creation of a new generation of scholars in Jewish education, the Jim Joseph Foundation has announced a $12 million grant, awarded to Stanford University’s School of Education (SUSE) to create a doctoral Concentration in Education and Jewish Studies. A key component of the new concentration is the establishment of an endowed Jim Joseph Professorship in Education and Jewish Studies. The gift is the largest in the history of Stanford’s School of Education.

Canfei Nesharim is pleased to announce that its Executive Director, Evonne Marzouk, is the leader of a team which has been selected by the ROI Innovation Fund for a $50,000 grant which will enable the creation of an expansive new set of tools to empower the entire Jewish environmental community. Five new Jewish camps are launching across the United States this summer with seed money from the Specialty Camps Incubator run by the Foundation for Jewish Camp and funded by the Jim Joseph Foundation with a $10.1 million grant two years ago. The hope is that these new camps will fill niches and draw hundreds more young Jews to Jewish camps.

Natan Sharansky, new chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, has signaled his intent to bring about radical change to the financially strapped Jewish Agency, shifting its focus away from aliyah to Israel and toward strengthening the secular identity of Diaspora Jews in recent addresses and the recent appointment to key positions of people who share his views.

The Avi Chai Foundation, one of the largest Jewish foundations, is making preparations for cessation of all its operations in 2020 in North America, Israel and the former Soviet Union, aside from an endowment the foundation will leave to run its campus in Israel, Beit Avi Chai. The foundation is slated to spend down almost all of its estimated $600 million in assets over the next decade.

The mission of the Jewish Teen Funders Network (JTFN) is to provide Jewish teens with hands-on opportunities to engage in collective philanthropic giving with their peers, guided by Jewish values.The JTFN is an association of 82 Jewish teen philanthropy programs throughout North America. These programs are for both boys and girls, ages 13-18, are built around values clarification exercises, collective decision-making, philanthropic giving, and teen leadership.

World ORT is at the forefront of an educational and social initiative in Israel with its implementation of a three-year, NIS 47 million joint project along with branches of the Israeli Government to install more than 400 “smart classrooms” across the country’s north. Through its programmatic arm in Israel, Kadima Mada, World ORT is investing NIS 16 million to bring 21st century technology to 72 relatively under-resourced Jewish and non-Jewish schools and to benefit some 40,000 students a year.

Birthright Israel NEXT has partnered with Natan to create the Birthright Israel NEXT/Natan Grants for Social Entrepreneurs. This joint venture aims to provide young Jewish adults who are budding social entrepreneurs with additional grant opportunities for long-term initiatives and/or ongoing programs. Birthright Israel NEXT and Natan seek to fund innovative ideas developed and implemented by young Jewish adults – either on their own or in partnership with existing Jewish organizations and resources.

In their December 11 issue, the Forward published an opinion article from Rabbi Irving Greenberg titled “There Is No Alternative to Day Schools.” Lamenting what he sees as an increasing tendency in the Jewish community to look beyond day schools in favor of less expensive educational alternatives, Greenberg wrote: “I, too, wish there were a cheap, effective alternative to day schools — but there is not.” The Forward invited a diverse group of scholars and Jewish education specialists to respond to Greenberg’s essay. They are published in this special section— along with a response from Greenberg.
