Nostalgia about summer traditions notwithstanding, Jewish camps have changed dramatically from a generation ago. Camp’s value for Jewish education and identity-building is now a major focus of communal attention. Major Jewish foundations, federations and organizations are investing heavily in the sector. Many camps have become more intentional about incorporating Jewish learning, Shabbat and Israel into their programming. They’ve also evolved to meet families’ changing expectations and demands: offering a wider range of choices of all kinds (from food to activity to session length); providing more frequent updates and communications to parents; accommodating numerous medical requirements and allergies; and placing greater emphasis on safety and security.

It used to be that parents who wanted to expose their children to conversational Hebrew over the summer had to travel to Israel. Now a growing number of American Jewish day camps are offering Hebrew-immersion programs, where kids do the standard day camp activities — swimming, arts and crafts, music, zip-lining and field trips — but “hakol b’ivrit.” The rise of Hebrew day camps comes on the heels of an expanding Hebrew charter school movement in the United States. Approximately 3,000 children, not all of them Jewish, are now enrolled in the tuition-free schools, which focus on Hebrew learning and Israeli culture.

Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is excited to announce the opening of Ha’Geemnasia Hebrew Summer Camp – a brand new Israeli style summer camp for children entering kindergarten through fourth grade. The Foundation for Jewish Camp is piloting a new program this summer offering some first-time campers discounts of 40 to 80 percent below the standard rate. Called BunkConnect, the program will make available 1,100 discounted slots at 35 camps in the Northeast, New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, the foundation announced Monday.

The Tivnu Gap Year Program is a 9-month residential experience for high school graduates, ages 17-20, from across North America and beyond. Participants work, study, and live together in Portland, Oregon, building homes, creating community, and exploring the connections between Judaism and social justice. Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future (CJF) has announced that it is now accepting applications and nominations for Cohort IV of its Certificate Program in Experiential Jewish Education. The Certificate Program provides outstanding in-service practitioners with tools, knowledge and skills designed to infuse their practice with deliberation and intentionality by introducing theories and models that capture the essence of experiential Jewish education and its impact on the formation of Jewish identity.

BBYO’s Stand UP initiative empowers teens to identify a cause that inspires them, and develop their own campaign to affect positive change in their local and global community. It is a grassroots movement of Jewish teens across the globe to take action and tackle the issues and causes they care about most. Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future recently announced that its “Counterpoint Israel” winter break program, a 10-day mission that aims to empower Israeli teens from low socio-economic backgrounds, has doubled in size with the addition of four new “Winter Camps” in Kiryat Gat and the expansion of the existing program in Kiryat Malachi.

Havurah, a unique program for teens from the North American Russian Jewish community, had its inaugural session during the 2009 summer at Camp Tel Yehudah in Barryville, New York. The program gives the opportunity for teens entering 9th through 12th grades to spend three and a half weeks with their peers at Camp Tel Yehudah, the national teen leadership camp of Young Judaea. Havurah will be held again this summer between July 21 – August 14, 2014.

In last October, a devoted group of local Las Vegas Birthrighters attended our first-ever Idea Slam, a space where young adults are empowered to not only generate ideas, but also to make them a reality. Over the course of the evening, participants schmoozed, ate dinner, and brainstormed new ways to engage with their peers, Judaism, and the local Las Vegas Jewish community. By evening’s end, they had generated over 100 ideas, voted on the top three that they wanted to see happen, and signed up to help actualize the ideas they liked best.
