In recent years a growing number of Americans have made the decision to immigrate to Israel. Immigration to Israel entails many challenges for a family. One segment of immigrants who are at particular risk for transition difficulties post-migration is adolescents. Considering the many biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes experienced by adolescents, including the identity formation process and its sensitivity to environmental changes, preliminary research and clinical evidence suggests that many adolescents respond to the immigration transition in negative ways. However, adolescent immigration in general is an understudied topic and is practically a non-existent subject of study in terms of the experience of American adolescents immigrating to Israel. In order to fill the existing gap in understanding how immigration to Israel impacts American adolescents, the current preliminary qualitative study investigated the immigration process and adjustment of recent US immigrant teens to Israel.

The school year is set to begin in Israel on Tuesday, with more than 2 million children and teens poised to enter or return to the school system. Of them, a record number of 2,900 students will be attending an Israeli school for the first time, having immigrated to Israel this summer. Some 360 new immigrants will be starting school as Israeli first graders. According to the Immigrant Absorption Ministry, the number of new immigrant students this year constitutes an increase of more than 50% over last year. In September 2014, only 1,900 new immigrant students entered Israel's school system.

This past summer, 40 young Jews from war-torn Ukraine found necessary, if not ironic, respite in a quiet kibbutz in southern Israel – despite the conflict raging on the Gaza border. Flown to Israel for relief from Ukraine’s most dangerous regions, including Donetsk, these students were participants of ZMAN.IL, a special Jewish Agency for Israel project funded by the Jewish Federations of North America and UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.
