Previously, I argued for the importance of Jewish literacy as providing a richer and more powerful framework for discussion of the mission of Jewish day schools, compared with the prevalent emphasis on Jewish. Here I’d like to expand upon that idea to explore ways that Jewish literacy can lead to new, creative forms of Jewish action, through embracing contemporary modes of learning. In a technological reality that literally puts virtually everything that can be known into the palm of your hand, the traditional memory-based learning model is becoming less relevant. What emerges instead is the great opportunity to emphasize the application of knowledge, ideally in ways that foster collaboration, draw on creativity, and bring about positive change and lasting good.

How can it be that the most narcissistic, self-absorbed, self-indulgent, materialistic generation that the world has ever known is also capable of causing social revolutions in any number of countries and mobilizing the masses in countless political campaigns — perhaps even saving the planet from environmental disaster?This ambiguity plagues any organization that has young people on its radar. And, at a time when institutions are clamoring for relevance if not survival, this complexity should be front and center for discussion in the Jewish community.

The Second Annual Frisch RealSchool Summer Sandbox is coming, July 21-13, 2014 at The Frisch School in Paramus, NJ. The Sandbox is a time for you, someone who is passionate about Jewish education, to get together with those who are like-minded in order to make a project you can implement in your educational setting. Our focus this year is on creativity: how to imbue it into the classroom; use it to redesign your courses; and make space for it in the larger educational setting.

Recently, the Jim Joseph Foundation made an investment in a National Incubator for Community-Based Jewish Teen Education Initiatives to support the work of the local operators and facilitate ongoing learning and collaboration. With ongoing debate about the viability of national Jewish organizations in North American Jewish life, the Jim Joseph Foundation has made a modest investment to ensure cross-community support and learning (one key function of a national intermediary). Yet, it intentionally has not invested in building a new independent national nonprofit, opting instead to partner with an existing organization that has the appropriate expertise to operate the incubator.

We are currently in the second year of experimenting with a new approach to bringing innovative solutions to challenges and opportunities facing NY Jewish Day Schools. The Day School Collaboration Network is a network of educators who share the goal of developing more inspiring, relevant and creative solutions to challenges facing their schools and, by extension, to the broader field of Jewish day school education. This joint project of UpStart Bay Area and The Jewish Education Project made possible by a generous grant from UJA Federation of New York, enables day school educators working at the “grass roots” (including classroom teachers, curriculum heads, deans, counselors, and learning specialists) to identify and grapple with challenges that impact the field of Jewish day school education, regardless of religious, philosophical, and geographic differences

Yeshiva University’s Institute for University-School Partnership co-hosted iJED 2014, a conference focusing on innovation in Jewish education, at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale, NY, March 2-4. Unlike traditional conferences, the event was structured to create a more interactive and in-depth learning and networking experience by modeling “flipped learning,” a cutting-edge educational technique in which students review lectures and materials at home and use class time for peer discussion and problem-solving with teachers

A think tank, Education in a Renewing World - Future Intelligence, established by the MOFET Institute – an Education Ministry funded, non-profit organization that works on research and development of programs in teacher education, convened on last Sunday for their first meeting. The committee comprised of education and futurology experts, hosted Knesset Member, Amram Mitzna, Chairman of the Knesset Education, Culture and Sports Committee at their first meeting. This committee has been tasked with addressing the issue of evolution in education in light of constant breakthroughs in technology, medicine and the humanities that are achieved every day.

In last October, a devoted group of local Las Vegas Birthrighters attended our first-ever Idea Slam, a space where young adults are empowered to not only generate ideas, but also to make them a reality. Over the course of the evening, participants schmoozed, ate dinner, and brainstormed new ways to engage with their peers, Judaism, and the local Las Vegas Jewish community. By evening’s end, they had generated over 100 ideas, voted on the top three that they wanted to see happen, and signed up to help actualize the ideas they liked best.

Over 100 Jewish educators from 25 different European countries attended the 6th Arachim Conference in Madrid on the November 17-19, 2013. Arachim, organized by the European Council of Jewish Communities (ECJC) and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), was hosted by the Jewish Community of Madrid, with the support of the Lauder Foundation. Arachim 6 encouraged the participants to connect and learn about Innovation in Jewish Education, giving rise to many new collaborative educational programs.
