Unpacked for Educators, the division of Jewish media company OpenDor Media, dedicated to providing resources to help educators engage and inspire students, is launching Israel History Month 2020 this November. Last year, over 120 schools from nine countries took part in the inaugural month-long celebration of Israeli history, with more schools expected to join in 2020.

Five pivotal events that shaped Israel’s history took place during November throughout the years.

Among them are the anniversaries of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in 1995, the passing of UN Resolution 3379, which equated Zionism with racism in 1975, and the signing of the Balfour Declaration in 1917.

November also saw the launch of Operation Moses in 1984, in which thousands of Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Israel, and the passage of the Partition Plan in the UN in 1947.

To help teachers easily integrate the November lessons into their curriculum, Unpacked for Educators has created a comprehensive, free curriculum that includes videos, lesson materials and experiential activities. Teachers and informal educators are free to focus on as few or as many of the five pivotal events as they want.

These materials can be used when teaching in-person or virtually.

Michal Ilai, Israel Programs Coordinator at the Weber School in Atlanta had this to say about the resources:

Authentic and historically accurate, the videos and extensive materials offer my students a learning experience that successfully bridges the gap of time and place. We are taken to Israel - past and present.

The thoughtful classroom conversations that follow indicate that our students simply ‘get it.’

Unpacked for Educators resources are free for all teachers and educators.
