Israeli high school students will be able to major in cyber studies in the coming school year, as part of an initiative the Education Ministry in conjunction with the IDF's cyber command announced on Sunday. The new program will be launched in 20 high schools nationwide when school resumes in September, 2015 and the ministry plans to gradually expand it. Students who choose to major in cyber studies will study five disciplines: information and communication technologies; information retention, sharing, and development; Internet and social media; information and informatics; and foreign languages in the cybersphere.

Cyber studies seek to expose high school students to technological innovations, methods of detecting and analyzing digital information, and various programming languages, a ministry official said.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has also decided to expand the Cyber Defense Studies Program, a pilot program launched in 2012 in collaboration with the IDF's cyber command.

The 2015-2016 school year will see the program, promoted as part of the ministry's efforts to boost technological education, span 32 schools nationwide.

The program offers students the opportunity to major in computer science, cyber defense, mathematics, and natural sciences, including physics, chemistry and biology, and includes lectures by cyber experts and defense industry tours.
