In a recent online Hebrew YNET article, Tamar Trebelsi Hadad writes of the discussions held by the Psychological Counseling Service of the Israel Ministry of Education on the relationships between teachers and students on social networks such as Facebook. Alongside the pedagogic and personal benefits attainable by these interactions on social networks, most teachers are not yet aware of the problems which may arise from these ties. In order to make schools more aware of the issues involved, the Counseling Service plans to publish suggested 'dos and don'ts' for use of social networks by teachers.

The Israeli Inter-University Committee has recently decided to recognize Oral Torah (Toshba) as a general culture subject towards entitlement to a high school matriculation certificate. This now means that a student who studies this subject for an extended matriculation exam will have it recognized by the universities as an academic subject for university acceptance. It is expected that this development will bring about a significant rise in the number of high school students in non-religious government schools who will choose to study this subject as part of their matriculation curriculum.

On the sixth day of Chanukah, the Israeli Association of Information Technologies in Education held a conference on 21st Century Skills – Miracles or Wonders. As the new National Plan for Making the Israel Education System Suitable for the 21st Century begins to roll out, a few hundred educators, administrators and educational technology experts gathered at the MOFET Institute in Tel Aviv to discuss ways of using technology to help students attain the skills they will need to live productively in the 21st century.

The Beit Berl College has established an academic unit to aid beginning teachers deal with difficulties in their work during their year of internship and the following two years of work. The main aim of the unit is to prevent the dropout of beginning teachers from the school system. This, in the light of recent research, which shows that about half of the graduates of Israeli teacher colleges don't go into teaching or dropout of the profession within three years of their graduation.

Recently, a new Hebrew language social network for Israeli educators, Shluvim, was launched by the MOFET Institute. The network aims to create a virtual meeting place for education professionals, teachers, lecturers, pedagogic mentors, researchers and others. Shluvim will strive to efficiently meet the needs for ongoing knowledge sharing, creation of communal knowledge, professional development and affective development and support between Israeli education professionals. Shluvim aims to provide a platform for teachers and teacher educators to keep professionally informed and in contact with colleagues and developments in the field and thus fostering personal empowerment.

In October, 2010 the Shalom Hartman Institute, in partnership with Keren Karev, will launch the new Be’eri School for Teacher Education. The School will offer a basic and advanced track for teachers, as well as a track customized for school principals. The basic teachers training track provides junior and high school teachers with the tools required to become instructors in Jewish heritage—Tarbut Yisrael. The advanced track is targeted at accredited teachers in the field of Jewish heritage who wish to broaden their expertise in this field and potentially become Tarbut Yisrael coordinators in their schools.

JTA reports that an annual initiative will provide more than 50,000 secular Israelis with free Yom Kippur prayer services. The Tzohar rabbinic organization's Praying Together on Yom Kippur initiative organizes more than 200 explanatory Yom Kippur services in cultural centers in communities across Israel.

As summer was drawing to a close, 26 principals from the three Jewish education networks in the Former Soviet Union came together for an eight-day seminar, designed and implemented by the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, to strengthen their managerial and other skills.

A new Israeli Government program will see Arabic language classes made compulsory in Israel's schools, starting from the fifth grade. Beginning this year as pilot initiative in 170 public and religious-public schools in northern Israel, the scheme will eventually be adopted across the country.
