BBYO Starting BEYOND – a New Gap Year Program in Israel

BEYOND is an Israel-based gap year BBYO sponsored enrichment program designed for Jewish students following their high school graduation. Participants can choose between a 5-month and a 9-month experience. BEYOND weaves together academic study, leadership development, community service, educational travel, and Jewish life experiences in Israel. BEYOND is a project of BBYO and is open to Jewish young adults of all backgrounds and nationalities.

Israel Heritage in Spotlight in International Photo Contest

An international photography competition taking place in September, 2012, aims, among other things, to capture and make available for free download hundreds images of modern and ancient heritage sites in Israel. The event in Israel, which will span one month and include a wide variety of free events at local heritage sites as well as technical workshops in photography, is part of the global “Wiki Loves Monuments” photography competition that was launched last year and will take place in an additional 32 countries worldwide.

Jewish Identity Runs Strong as Russian Speaking Teens Gather in Israel

Close to 300 Russian speaking teens from around the world gathered in Israel for a two-week summer camp organized by the Jewish Agency and the Genesis Fund. The camp, part of an ongoing effort called Project Rimon, is focused on a commitment to instill Jewish identity within the campers and use Israel as the common denominator that unites Jews of Russian origin from diverse locales around the globe.

Training Birthright Trip Leaders: A Response From The Field

He agrees with the diagnosis but thinks that additional training is not sufficient. He calls for a concerted effort by trip organizers to choose madrichim with basic skill sets that will allow them to successfully serve as educators and meaningful facilitators for the Birthright groups they lead.

The Jewish Agency Expands Presence on College Campuses

The Jewish Agency for Israel has bolstered the ranks of its campus emissaries for the 2012-2013 academic year. There are now 56 Israel Fellows on 70 North American campuses (including five in Canada), up from 50 Fellows last year. Trained and recruited by The Jewish Agency, these Fellows help students connect to the Jewish State and respond to anti-Israel activity.

Israel Sci-Tech Curriculum Making Impact at U.S. Jewish Day Schools

A science and technology program designed by Israel Sci-Tech Schools Network (ISTSN) has been exported to the United States for the first time this academic year to seven Jewish day schools – all in the New York area. The program is a pilot project in the schools, in collaboration with ISTSN and the Center for Innovation in Jewish Education (CIJE), which offers funding and ongoing support to educators.

Engineering Enduring Change: Learning What it Will Take to Transform Day School Israel Education from a Study of BASIS

Launched in September 2008, at the stimulus of the Jim Joseph Foundation, BASIS—the Bay Area Schools Israel Synergy initiative—has been an ambitious initiative to intensify Israel education in eleven Jewish day schools. This report studies the BASIS initiative so as to learn what might lead to enduring change elsewhere in the field of day school Israel education and in any Jewish communal effort to produce systemic and sustained change across multiple educational institutions.
