Day Schools Need New Israel Ed Approach
Authors: Rosenblatt Gary
Gary Rosenblatt of the Jewish Week reacts to a new study of day school students’ attitudes about Israel presented by Alex Pomson at The North American Jewish Day School Conference in Los Angeles last week. The study found that many of the 43 U.S. high school juniors interviewed by a research team from the Melton Center for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University were somewhat doubtful of their schools’ attempts to convince them of certain pro-Israel points of view. They frequently criticized the schools and teachers of being biased.

The Other Right of Birthright
Authors: Muss Alexander
Stephen Muss, Honorary Chairman of Lapid - The Coalition for High School Age Programs in Israel, reacted to a recent announcement about new extraordinary support for Birthright Israel – Taglit, by the Israeli Government. He points out that the Birthright model of awarding free ten-day trips to Israel for Jewish youth age 18-26 has caused the enrollment of Israel high school-age programs to suffer as they do not receive financial support of the Israeli Government. Parents faced with the decision to either pay out money for high school age trips to Israel or wait until “Birthright” age, when it can be free, choose the latter, even though intensive Israel high school trips may even be more effective in helping youth develop their Jewish identity.

The trip will also include a professional development component so that teachers are able to take what they are feeling and learning and bring it back to their classrooms.

Connecting via The iCenter: A Chicago-Based Organization's Innovative Ways and Means of Getting Young Jews to Put the 'i' in Israel
Authors: Dubkin Yearwood Pauline
The CJN writes of the Chicago launch event for the iChallenge Ideas Incubator, focusing on activating creativity. At the end, participants were invited to submit proposals for grants for dynamic ideas in Jewish education, five of which will ultimately be chosen for grants of $30,000. The event was sponsored by the iCenter, a Chicago based non-profit educational organization aimed at developing and enhancing the field of Israel education. More than 100 Jewish educators, gathered into small groups, chattered and buzzed in search of the next big idea in Jewish education - or maybe just something that would get the kids they teach excited about Israel.

Major Boost For Birthright Funding from Israeli Gov’t; Tipping Point In Sight
Authors: Rosenblatt Gary
Gary Rosenblatt writes about Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu's announcement of the Israeli government’s decision to more than double its investment in the popular free 10-day trips for young Diaspora Jews, Birthright Israel, to $100 million in funding over the next three years. That, along with the commitment of funders in the US to significantly increase their donations to Birthright, means that by 2013, more than half of all Jews in the world between the ages of 18 and 26 will have had a ten-day free trip to Israel.

Israel and the Jewish World in Jewish Education
Authors: Melton Center for Jewish Education – The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
The Melton Centre for Jewish Education represents the Hebrew University’s commitment to the advancement of Jewish education worldwide. For many years that commitment has included a focus on understanding and improving how Israel is taught in the Diaspora. This focus has seen expression in conferences, research projects, professional development programs, and curriculum development initiatives, all animated by a shared incentive to advancing the field of Israel education. In recent years, the Centre's work in this field has intensified in response to a widespread concern that younger Diaspora Jews are increasingly disconnected from the State of Israel. This intensifying work has, in turn, fostered insights, skills and institutional capacity at the Centre that is expected to bear on future projects.

Eight US Universities to Launch Study Programs in Israel
Authors: Shefler Gil
Eight of the US’s top universities will launch study-abroad programs in Israel in 2011 and 2012 as part of a new initiative to encourage study abroad and academic exchange here, the Jewish Agency announced recently. Currently, some 1,500 American university students study in Israel each year. The Masa program, which is part of the Jewish Agency, hopes to boost those numbers considerably so that one day they are on a par with places like London and Paris, where tens of thousands of young Americans go to spend a semester abroad each year.
