Havaya International

Havaya International is a 5 week long opportunity to travel like a local in both Israel and across the United States, while making a positive difference in our global village. Made up of eighteen American teens and eighteen Israeli teens, going into 10th-12th grade, Havayaniks will spend two and a half weeks traveling throughout Israel with local Israelis from the 92nd Street Y's sister city in Ramat Hasharon and two and a half weeks in the U.S. getting the opportunity to share their lives with their Israeli counterparts.

It's Not Just About Sports at the International Jewish Olympics

The opening ceremony of the 18th Maccabiah will take place on July 13, 2009. President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu will open the ceremony. The Maccabiah has organized various sporting events in more than 30 locations all around the country, from Maalot and Tiberias in the north, to Kibbutz Urim in the south, which will span over 10 days, making this the biggest Maccabiah in history. 5300 Jewish athletes from around the world plus 2000 Israelis are expected to take place in the games, which makes the Maccabiah the 3rd largest sporting event in the world, after the Olympics and the University games.

Green Project Brings Together US, Israeli Pupils

Sviva Israel and the Jewish Agency's Partnership 2000 of New Jersey-Delaware/Arad-Tamar are finishing a successful first year that paired two Israeli schools with two US schools in their Eco-Connection program. The Eco-Connection project, which began in January, 2009, focused on measuring pupils' ecological footprints and teaching the three basic tenets of environmental behavior - reduce, reuse, recycle. Pupils surveyed their ecological footprints and worked on campaigns to get their schools to reduce water and energy use. They also learned about Jewish responses to environmentalism as well as environmentally clean technologies.

Write On for Israel

This intensive, two-year program, sponsored jointly by JUF News and the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago, combines history and politics with hands-on training in writing and public speaking. It is open to 25 exceptional high school juniors (as of fall 2009) who love Israel; who write and speak well, can commit to a 2-year extracurricular program in Israel and advocacy; and are ready for an extraordinary trip to Israel that goes beyond tourism to active engagement in the issues.

OTZMA: The Israel Teacher Corps Track

OTZMA, the Israel service program supported by UJC/Jewish Federations of North America and the Jewish Agency for Israel, has launched a new project to give North American college graduates (age 20-26) an opportunity to spend 10 months teaching English in under-served Israeli schools. Called the Israel Teacher Corps (ITC), the program was inspired by the successful Teach for America program, in which top college graduates teach in struggling American schools.
