Searching for the Study of Israel: A Report on the Teaching of Israel on U.S. College Campuses 2008-09

An update of a 2006 report, Searching for the Study of Israel examines the scope of academic courses being taught about Israel on more than 300 leading American college and university campuses and finds that the state of education about Israel has improved since the original study. A comparison of the 246 institutions included in both studies shows a 69% growth in courses that focus specifically on Israel over the three-year period.

These updates connect lesson plans in the existing curriculum to new articles and insights from CAMERA’s home Web site and its blog, 'Snapshots', as well as other sources. The updates relate to the ongoing problems of the world’s news media in reporting accurately from and about the Jewish state.

Birthright Israel NEXT and the Invisible Doubling Effect

Twenty Y.U. High School Students Earn Israeli Culture Immersion Experience

Yeshiva University recently announced that 20 outstanding tenth graders from the Yeshiva University high schools – 10 from the Yeshiva University High School for Boys/Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy (YUHSB) and 10 from the Samuel H. Wang Yeshiva University High School for Girls (YUHSG) – will be participating in a unique six-week student exchange program with Israeli high schools. Now in its second year, the program aims to immerse the American students in Israeli culture and help them connect with their Israeli counterparts.

Eye 2 Israel

In the unique Eye 2 Israel educational project, the students of the ORT Israel Network share their experiences of growing up in Israel and strive to maintain the positive image of the country in the eyes of site visitors all around the world. The students write on the project website in English and other languages, reacting to recent events, the Arab – Israeli conflict, the achievements of Israeli athletes, scientists, artists and more. They also contact other teenagers around the world and discuss their lives in Israel, invite discussion on social networks and websites and bring new people into the project.

Ministry Bans Student Jewish Agency Trips to U.S. During School Year

As of next month, Israeli elementary and high schools will no longer be allowed to send students and teachers on delegations outside Israel during the school year, the Education Ministry recently said. The decision - which does not apply to trips to Poland and international competitions - is expected to affect the Partnership 2000 exchange program, in which dozens of delegations of Israeli pupils visit the United States through cooperation between the Jewish Agency and various Jewish federations.

Baltimore Israel Engagement Summit: Executive Summary

On Monday, November 16, 2009, more than 100 members of the Baltimore Jewish community participated in The Associated’s Israel Education & Engagement Summit. The purpose of the summit was to open a community dialogue about the future of the relationship between the next generation of Baltimore Jews and Israel. Representatives from more than 20 organizations participated in the summit, bringing their knowledge and investment in a vibrant relationship with Israel to the table.

Shimon Peres' YouTube Channel

Israeli President Shimon Peres recently launched his own YouTube channel. He inaugurated his channel alongside YouTube founder Chad Hurley, who made a special trip to Israel for the event. Peres will use the channel to meet Web surfers around the world, including those from countries with which Israel does not have formal diplomatic relations. The president also will answer questions from YouTube viewers at virtual news conferences he hosts.
