Holocaust and Human Behavior Online Course for Educators in a Jewish Setting
Authors: Facing History and Ourselves
How is history shaped by hatred, indifference, and denial, as well as by caring, compassion, and responsibility? Grounded in the study of Jewish ethics and values, Facing History and Ourselves' online course, Holocaust and Human Behavior Online Course for Educators in a Jewish Setting, examines the range of choices that led to the failure of democracy in Germany and ultimately to the persecution of millions of Jews and other targeted groups. Participants will investigate the connection between Jewish history and identity, the moral questions inherent in everyday life, and how we as individuals and members of groups can make a difference in the world today.

Authors: Newbrun Deborah
In May of this year, with funding from the Foundation for Jewish Camps and AVI CHAI Foundation, we convened our pilot group near Yosemite National Park for the first-ever session of Jewish Outdoor Leadership Training for summer camp employees – aptly abbreviated to JOLT. For five intense days, these camp and wilderness leaders from nine summer camps (who together reached somewhere between 7000-8000 campers) found new connections to their Judaism and ways of teaching Judaism outdoors and on the camp trail.

The Summer Meeting of the MOFET International Forum of Teachers of Hebrew as an Additional Language
Authors: Naparstek Rachel
Two days have passed since the summer meeting of the MOFET International Forum of Teachers of Hebrew as an Additional Language was held, and I am still excited about it. We met members from all over the world – people whom we usually only encounter 'virtually' via the Internet website. It was very interesting and enjoyable to meet them face to face. The session took place as a learning encounter that included two artistic interludes. At this meeting, the emphasis was placed on learning difficulties and ways of resolving them.

Bridges to New Knowledge: Culture, Religion and Identity in Teachers’ Professional Development
Authors: Raider Roth Miriam B.
This article investigates how one Summer Teachers’ Seminar sought to support teachers’ capacity to understand and teach about religion and culture. Using a qualitative, feminist, action-research methodology, the article questions whether the study of one religion and culture creates a bridge toward understanding larger questions of diversity. Findings suggest that such bridge building is possible, when supported by the exploration of the diversity of one culture itself, participating in relational pedagogical practices that focus on cultural artifacts, and a learning environment with diverse participants.

Teaching Vocabulary in a Second Language – A MOFET International Webinar
Authors: MOFET International
Today it is clear from research that vocabulary is the most important component of language knowledge. In addition, it has been shown that in second-language courses vocabulary cannot be acquired solely through incidental learning from reading or listening: it needs to be deliberately taught in the classroom. In this talk in Hebrew, on Tuesday, Septemeber 1, 2015 at 22:00 Israel time, Prof. Penny Ur will present a number of practical principles underlying effective vocabulary teaching, with some examples of classroom procedures based on them. These will cover both presentation of new items and further review with the aim of ensuring long-term retention.

Romemanu Mi’Kol Lashon – Raising the Discourse of Hillel Educators
Authors: Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education - Jewish Theological Seminary
Over 50 Hillel professionals met the first week of June at Capital Camps for the first Hillel Educators Kallah. Attendees represented the gamut of Hillel roles, directors, engagement professionals, campus rabbis, and more. Regardless of title or job description, we consider ourselves Jewish educators. But we were stuck when asked if we really consider ourselves educators – what was our pedagogy? What was our method and practice? How could it be assessed, and indeed, are we even able to really demonstrate our successes? It became clear during our discussion that if Hillel staff, regardless of academic training, are going to consider ourselves Jewish educators, we need a method and practice that will merge the central elements, or commonplaces, of Judaism (God, Torah and Israel) with the central elements of education (subject, learner, educator and environment). What would be a curriculum that could be shared by Hillel movement? Even further, how would we measure the successful implementation of that content?
