Building upon the previous successes of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel (ISMI), CIE offers the CIE/ISMI Educator Enrichment Workshop on Modern Israel: a five-day opportunity for educators and educational leaders to deepen their understanding of Israel’s history, politics, economy and culture, while cultivating participants’ skills in classroom application and best practices. The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for this year’s session of the Continuing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language. The workshop will take place in Jerusalem on 8-12 July 2018 / 25-29 Tammuz 5778, and will focus on the relationship between Modern and Classical Hebrew, with special attention to practical teaching strategies.

As more than 750 Jewish summer camp professionals, educators, philanthropists and communal leaders gathered on March 18 for Foundation for Jewish Camp’s (FJC) seventh biennial Leaders Assembly, FJC unveiled a new initiative to prevent harassment and abuse, sexist language and behavior in the camp community. The “Shmira Initiative” aims to change camp culture on all levels, implementing a shift in staff programming, training, policy and enforcement around issues of gender, sex and power. Shmira, in Hebrew and in the vernacular of Jewish summer camp, means guard duty, embodying the social and individual responsibility every community member must ensure a safe environment.

Jewish tradition teachers from over 40 schools in the FSU attended two educational seminars organized by FJC’s ‘Darkeinu’ Jewish studies curriculum and ‘Or Avner’ educational network in Dnieper, Ukraine, and Moscow, Russia. Both seminars took place at campuses of Jewish higher education Institutes – Beit Chana in Ukraine and Machon Chamesh in Moscow.

We are happy to invite you to a unique seminar on teaching Hebrew as a second language, run by the Education Department of the World Zionist Organization. The seminar will be held on February 4-9, 2018. The seminar will include lectures, workshops, tours and visits to various educational institutions and cultural events as part of the Conference on the Hebrew Language in Rishon Letzion, Israel (Lashon Rishon).

As Jewish educators, we are called upon to teach texts and content, inculcate skills and model Jewish values, all while inspiring students to embrace a Jewish life that has contemporary meaning and purpose. As 21st-century guides, we are tasked with developing moral character, nurturing spirituality, fostering healthy relationships, building resilience and cultivating independence. How do we balance these roles and determine our priorities? Is there a deeper understanding of Jewish text that could provide direction? Are there new findings in education that offer guidance? What skills and insights do we need to keep sharpening? What will excellence in Jewish education look like in the next 5-10 years? At the Pardes Center for Jewish Educators November 2017 conference (November 5-7, 2017), Cultivating the Whole Child Through a Jewish Lens – for PCJE alumni and their colleagues – we will explore these and other questions in a warm, spirited environment of collegiality and openness. We will learn together, reflect on our work and challenges, and share ideas and best practices.
