The 2017 (October 20-22) Seminar in Hebrew Pedagogy of the University of Denver & Middlebury Language Schools is a weekend seminar on topics in Hebrew language pedagogy, featuring national scholars from a variety of specializations. The seminar’s theme this year is The Hebrew Lesson Plan: Maximizing Acquisition and Culture-Based Pedagogy. Some hands-on workshops/small groups’ work are planned during the seminar. Depending on the number of registrants and the age groups they teach, the presentations and the workshops will be tailored to address varied needs. As in past seminars, the objective of the seminar is to provide you with practical tools that can be applied to and incorporated into the classroom following the seminar.

The CASJE-sponsored Emerging Scholars Seminar at the 2017 Network for Research in Jewish Education (NRJE) conference was all the usual nice things. There was an interesting panel on potential career trajectories within the fields of Jewish educational research and practice. There were productive conversations between mentors and mentees that touched on a wide range of issues. Meredith Katz and Jeff Kress did an excellent job moderating conversation and providing a general structure to the various interactions. It was all very nice.

We in the Jewish education community are really beginning to dive into general education research when it comes to teaching (and learning) sacred text. The Mandel Center’s recent two-day conference on developing independent readers of Tanach was a wonderful experience of how productive such a gathering can be—especially when conducted with a group of talented, thoughtful and committed educators.

Building upon the previous successes of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel (ISMI), CIE now offers the CIE/ISMI Educator Enrichment Workshop on Modern Israel: a week-long (June 25-29, 2017) opportunity for educators and educational leaders to deepen their understanding of Israel’s history, politics, economy and culture, while cultivating participants’ skills in classroom application and best practices. This spring, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University will bring together a group of scholars and practitioners of elementary Tanakh education and the broader field of literacy education to begin formulating a pedagogical vision for Tanakh education. Over the course of two days, in dialogue with renowned literacy scholar Claude Goldenberg, we will ask, “How do we help students become independent readers of Tanakh? What instructional practices and pedagogies best promote these various facets of reading comprehension?” Beginning this conversation is an important next step to building a unified educational culture across the landscape of North American day schools. While the roster for this small conference is now fixed, we look forward to sharing the insights of this conference with the larger community.
