Five years ago, URJ Camps launched an Israel education and advocacy initiative with the generous support of the Legacy Heritage Fund. Partnering with the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Education on the New York campus, the iCenter and MAKOM, the URJ worked to develop strategies, curricula and an evaluation processes to reimagine, enhance and deepen the presence of Israel at URJ camps.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) has unveiled key findings from a survey and in-depth interviews mapping current, potential, and desired services available to children with emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities at nonprofit Jewish overnight camps across North America. It found that while the field is making progress in the types and amounts of services offered, there is still more to be done.

The Cornerstone Fellowship, generously funded by the AVI CHAI Foundation, promotes Jewish culture change at camp by offering Jewish educational training to exemplary returning bunk staff and professional development to camp leaders. Now in its ninth year, the program empowers counselors to play a larger creative role in Jewish programming and employs leading experiential Jewish educators to deliver a cutting-edge training experience at a four-day seminar.

Abrams, Cohen and Wertheimer write about a pilot study they conducted under the auspices of the AVI CHAI Foundation to learn about the factors that go into the decision of parents to enroll their children in a residential summer camp with a Jewish mission. Their goal was to assess the impact of norms within the social networks of Jewish parents, and, in particular, to examine the extent to which the recommendations of social peers play a significant role in the decision to send one’s children to a Jewish summer camp.

Amir (Hebrew for the top of the tree) is a nonprofit organization committed to the intellectual, emotional, and social development of all youth. Through experiential environmental education, specifically gardening, Amir provides children with an enlightened perspective on their relationship with others and their interaction with nature. Amir trains a select group of young adults in farming and experiential education that is then dispatched to partner summer camps across North America.

Close to 300 Russian speaking teens from around the world gathered in Israel for a two-week summer camp organized by the Jewish Agency and the Genesis Fund. The camp, part of an ongoing effort called Project Rimon, is focused on a commitment to instill Jewish identity within the campers and use Israel as the common denominator that unites Jews of Russian origin from diverse locales around the globe.

The Reform Movement announced this week the founding of the first Jewish specialty camp for science and technology. The new Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) camp, called the URJ 6 Points Science Academy, will open in the summer of 2014 in Boston, MA, and serve upwards of 600 campers in grades 6-10 over three two-week sessions per summer.

Gavin Beinart-Smollan tells how his two week stint as a counselor for the Szarvas Fellowships at Camp Szarvas in Hungary changed his perceptions of modern Judaism in Eastern Europe. His encounter with Jewish kids and youth leaders from across Eastern Europe involved in creating and living their Jewish identities changed the picture of Jewish existence in modern Eastern Europe presented to him in his previous organized trips to Poland.
