The Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has recently released a new digital tool, Experiencing History: Jewish Perspectives on the Holocaust, aimed to facilitate teaching. Experiencing History is aimed at college-and university level instructors who teach Holocaust-related courses, broadly defined. It features online collections of carefully selected Jewish primary sources, from diaries, letters and newspaper articles to photography, moving image and sound. The sources are grouped into thematic collections that allow for easy classroom integration. Each source is introduced and annotated by a Holocaust scholar, in order to provide enough historical context for a productive in-class discussion or an assignment.

Educators interested in teaching about modern Jewish literature and culture can access multimedia teaching materials, free of charge, on a new website, The Great Jewish Books Teacher Resources, a project of the Yiddish Book Center, in Amherst, Massachusetts. The website is home to a growing collection of resource kits focused on various aspects of modern Jewish culture, designed for use by secondary, college, and adult-education teachers. One kit, for instance, considers how Jews were represented onscreen in the early days of cinema, while another explores the cheder, the first educational experience for young boys in the shtetls of Eastern Europe. Others look at specific works of literature, from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s famed story “Gimpel the Fool” to Sholem Aleichem’s beloved Tevye the Dairyman character (the basis for Fiddler on the Roof). More kits will be added in the coming months.

How can Jewish educators keep up with the frenetic pace of new sites, apps and platforms appearing (and disappearing) constantly? More to the point, how can these resources be adapted to the world of Jewish education? Thus was born the idea of CJEiLearn. Created by the Friedman Commission for Jewish Education, located in West Palm Beach, Florida, CJEiLearn is a free resource specifically geared for Jewish educators working in both supplementary and day school settings. It is designed to help make sense out of the virtual “embarrassment of riches” that characterizes the Ed Tech universe, uniquely framing it within the needs of Jewish education.

At no point in history have there been more ways of learning Hebrew. Thanks to modern technology, there are many, many options out there, even for those with limited budgets, schedules and mobility — ranging in price from absolutely free to thousands of dollars. In addition to the traditional route of consulting books or signing up for an in-person class through a synagogue, Jewish community center or university — or traveling to Israel where there are myriad in-person courses and programs, you now can choose from an array of online courses, apps and software. Or, you can set aside a summer vacation for a full-scale immersion program in rustic Vermont!

Since it was founded in 1948, Israel has sent aid to 140 countries, helping people on virtually every continent with anything from emergency medical aid to psychological counselling, educational and environmental relief. And yet very few people know about it. Now we have brought these stories together in a remarkable online exhibition, My Name is Israel, which you can use and share wherever you want. The exhibition, which launches next week, is a powerful account of some of the most moving stories of Israeli aid overseas. It follows in the footsteps of our first wildly successful exhibition, 18 Ways Israel is Changing the World, which went on exhibit in hundreds of locations around the world.

Holocaust Denial on Trial, a website founded by Emory University professor Deborah Lipstadt to refute the misleading claims of Holocaust deniers, has been redesigned and relaunched. Created in 2005 through a partnership between Emory and the university’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, the website catalogues the legal and evidentiary material arising from David Irving v. Penguin UK and Deborah Lipstadt, a libel claim brought against Lipstadt and her publisher in 1996 by Holocaust denier Irving. Materials from the 32-day trial were posted on the Holocaust Denial on Trial (HDOT) website to provide perpetual access for scholars and the interested public and quality resources to combat Holocaust denial. The website’s redesign and relaunch are timed to coincide with release of the movie “Denial,” a feature film based on Lipstadt’s experiences during the case, which she chronicled in her 2005 book, “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier.”
