The Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University and MAKOM - The Israel Engagement Network announce a call for papers for an International Conference on The Purposes and Practices of Israel Education to be held at the Hebrew University, December 20-22, 2009.

The Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University and MAKOM - The Israel Engagement Network are committed to reconsidering the fundamental philosophical and practical questions of Israel as a crucial concern to contemporary Jewish life. When approaching the challenge of dealing with Israel in Jewish education there is a need for new thinking that can help address questions such as, where does Zionism fit in the teaching of Israel today? What should the subject matter of Israel education cover and why? Why is it important to teach about Israel in the Diaspora? What are the purposes of teaching Israel? What are the implications of national sovereignty to contemporary Jewish thought and education?

The conference executive is calling for proposals from scholars of Jewish Education, Israel Studies, Jewish Thought, Social Scientists, Historians and from reflective practitioners with experience in Schools, Summer Camps, Israel Travel, Adult Jewish Education, Israel Arts and related fields.

Proposals are being sought for three formats of presentation:

1) Academic papers
2) Reflective practitioner presentations
3) Spotlight sessions

in one of the three following categories:

• Conceptualizations of Israel Education
• Israel Education Design
• Israel Education Studies
