The education department of the National Library of Israel is delighted to announce the launch of its new website. The website provides a large and diverse collection of primary sources from the collection of the National Library.

In 2016-7 (5777), Shosh Hill, from the Kerem Primary school in London, together with the NLI team, created weekly Parashat Hashavua newsletters featuring primary sources from the National Library and many creative ideas for primary school students and their families. The Genesis (Bereshit) resource pack presents resources from throughout modern Jewish history that can be connected to the first book of the Torah. This book covers the time period from the creation of the world until the Jewish people – numbering just 70 – descended to Egypt.

One of the main values of the Jewish people is the day of rest - Shabbat.Throughout the generations and around the world, we have kept and marked this special day in many different ways: religious traditions, family time, culture and resting from the busy week.The National Library of Israel’s latest Shabbat resource pack includes a door sign written by a Nobel Laureate, an election poster protesting the lack of public transport on Shabbat, and a picture of an 18th century German Jewish woman lighting the Shabbat candles, giving a glimpse of the different aspects of Shabbat.

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries, in partnership with the Princeton Geniza Project, the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Genizah Research Unit at Cambridge University Library share Cairo Geniza fragments with the Zooniverse community for the first time! The purpose of phase I of Scribes of the Cairo Geniza is to sort Cairo Geniza fragments in order to prepare them for transcription in phase II (launching Spring 2018). In this phase, you will sort fragments into different categories based on their script types: whether they are written in Hebrew or Arabic scripts and formal or informal scripts, and whether they contain specific visual characteristics.

USHMM Launches Primary Source Teaching Tool - Experiencing History: Jewish Perspectives on the Holocaust
The Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has recently released a new digital tool, Experiencing History: Jewish Perspectives on the Holocaust, aimed to facilitate teaching. Experiencing History is aimed at college-and university level instructors who teach Holocaust-related courses, broadly defined. It features online collections of carefully selected Jewish primary sources, from diaries, letters and newspaper articles to photography, moving image and sound. The sources are grouped into thematic collections that allow for easy classroom integration. Each source is introduced and annotated by a Holocaust scholar, in order to provide enough historical context for a productive in-class discussion or an assignment.

The Library works to implement its educational goals via a number of significant actions – the establishment of a database of primary documents for teaching and learning, providing access to tools and activities, training teaching staff and educators and the establishment of informal educational programming for families and schools.
