Israel Gov't Approves 'Birthright for Jewish Teachers' Program

A program to bring Diaspora teachers and community leaders on a subsidized educational trip to Israel has gained Israel government approval for the first time. At a recent cabinet meeting, the ministers approved a pilot program of Netivey Masa, or Masa Pathways, a joint government-Jewish Agency project that is intended to finance a majority of the expense for such trips. The teachers will visit schools in Israel, and meet other educators preparing them to help establish an interface between the Israeli education system and Diaspora Jewish education systems.

The Lipper Internship at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

The Lipper Internship brings together graduate and undergraduate students from across the Northeast to train in New York City for a semester-long internship in museum education. Interns teach students about the Holocaust in local schools in their college communities and on visits to the Museum. During training, interns meet with Museum staff, hear testimony from Holocaust survivors, and learn methods for teaching from artifacts in the Museum's collection.

A new division of Yeshiva University's Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Supervision, the Institute for University-School Partnership, has launched a two‐year Teacher Training Fellowship which seeks to identify and recruit top college graduates to expose and train them in the field of Jewish Education through a two year training fellowship servicing Jewish day schools across North America.

The Senior Educators Program – The Melton Center for Jewish Education

The Senior Educators Program offers Jewish educators from all over the world a unique opportunity for professional development and personal enrichment. This 11-month program, conducted in Hebrew, takes place at the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and generous stipends for study and living expenses are awarded to all participants and their families. Participants from assorted countries and cultures, representing every stream of contemporary Jewish life, bring their varied professional backgrounds and diverse areas of expertise to the Program. Senior Educators explore innovative approaches to Jewish education, probe critical issues in Jewish thought and develop new skills to bring home to their communities. Over 300 Jewish educators have graduated from the program.

How a Learning Community Enhances Individual Learning in a Graduate Distance Education Program

From Reflection to Action: Professional Development as Springboard to Gender Education

A case study of Kayla, a former graduate student, highlights how she forged a connection with her middle school students over the course of a year, as she shifted perspectives on her role in the education of girls. This shift was an outgrowth of both pre-service and ongoing training on issues related to gender and education. In addition, an emphasis on reflective practice supported Kayla’s self-awareness of her potential impact on her female students.

The Online Academy for Jewish Studies at The MOFET Institute

The Online Academy for Jewish Studies at The MOFET Institute is a set of online courses whose main objective is to prepare teachers, educators and leaders in Jewish communities in the Diaspora for their mission. The Online Academy offers courses on topics that are suitable for educators and leaders in the Jewish world as well as students in universities and colleges in the fields of the didactics and pedagogy of teaching Jewish subjects in the Diaspora. During the upcoming semester, courses in teaching the Holocaust and teaching the Hebrew language will be offered.

Reform, Conservative Seminaries in Historic Partnership to Train Clergy

The largest Conservative and Reform seminaries are partnering in a establishing a pilot rabbinic training program which is the first to provide joint instruction to future clergy from the two different movements. Starting in fall 2008, the Schusterman Rabbinical Fellowship Program will bring together eight outstanding rabbinical students from the Conservative and Reform Movements for three years of formal study.

Teaching Rabbinic Literature: Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy
